The Emily Johanna Hoffman Memorial Scholarship

About the Memorial Fund

Emily graduated from Tech Elevator in 2019, and a tragic accident took her life in February 2023, leaving behind beloved friends and family. In her memory, they have established the Emily Johanna Hoffman Memorial Represent Tech Scholarship through the Emily Johanna Hoffman Fund at The Pittsburgh Foundation, through which they sponsor this scholarship for underrepresented Tech Elevator students from Southwest Pennsylvania. The scholarship honors Emily's adventurous, generous, and courageous spirit by assisting others who seek to transform their lives and communities through building new skills in software development.

The tuition covers nearly 80% of Tech Elevator tuition.

Emily's Curiosity Award

While at Tech Elevator, Emily stood out in her cohort for her fearlessness in asking questions. Knowing how things were done was not enough for Emily. She also wanted to know why. Emily’s Curiosity Award honors students who exhibit the same insatiable curiosity. Instructors nominate students whose questions:

  • Prompt instructors to think differently about the topic

  • Seek to understand why and not just how to do something

  • Demonstrate courage or vulnerability in being willing to say “I don’t understand”

This Award is offered periodically to a student or recent alum who embodies these traits during their time as a Tech Elevator student. Recipients receive a certificate and recognition at a graduation ceremony. There is no associated monetary award.

Curiosity Award Recipients:

  1. Laura Daehler
  2. Megan Sharretts
  3. Patrick Slevin
